Scope and Content
Administrative / Biographical History
Bertha Sander (1901 - 1990) studied at the School of Arts and Crafts in Cologne where she was taught by Philipp Hũsler, a former student of Josef Hoffmann. In 1923 Sander spent a year at the Wiener Werkstt̃te in Vienna, working mainly on textile patterns. In 1924 she returned to Cologne where she set up independently as an interior designer, concentrating on wallpaper and furniture design. She employed four joiners and produced children's furniture and completed interior schemes for libraries, nurseries and single person dwellings. In 1936 she emigrated to England where she was denied a work permit and was therefore unable to continue with her career.
