Scope and Content

Papers of Colonel David Williams (1752-1819) of Henllys, parish of Cilycwm, co. Carmarthen, who gave evidence at the trial of Warren Hastings. The records of his service in India for over eighteen years until his retirement in 1785 include his commission to be a lieutenant of infantry, 1773, signed by Warren Hastings; three letter books, 1781-1786, mainly of correspondence in the former year, particularly with Lieutenant Colonel Alex[ande]r Hannay; three tickets issued to David Williams for the trial of Warren Hastings; and nine letters, 1781-1805, mainly from fellow-officers. Among papers, 1798-1802, relating to Williams's service in command of the Royal Carmarthen Fusiliers is a notebook containing copies of correspondence concerning his resignation. Also included are letters, 1798-1815, some from [Sir] W[illia]m Paxton; satires, including one recording the 'Historical & Political Exploits of a D-rb-sh-re Squire' who canvassed Carmarthen in [17]66; a deed, 1784, relating to property in the parish of Llanfairarybryn; and correspondence, accounts, etc., 1826-1844, of William Jones of Henllys, who was Williams's nephew.
