Scope and Content
Administrative / Biographical History
The United Nations Council for Namibia adopted a plan to establish a tertiary education institution for Namibia in September 1974. The Institute was intended to help to prepare Namibians for the administration of their country and to take up positions in an independent Namibia. Namibia did not have its own tertiary education system and the United Nations Council for Namibia, under Sean MacBride, recommended the creation of an Institute for Namibia in Zambia. The Institute was opened in Lusaka on 26 August 1976 by the then President of Zambia, Kenneth Kaunda. It closed in September 1990, six months after Namibia’s independence.
