Scope and Content

Nine manuscript music compositions by Irwyn Walters (1902-1992) comprising: 'Trio for Violin, Viola and Cello', 1925; 'Y Sipsi' (a song for a soprano), words by Crwys, which won the first prize in the Inter-College Eisteddfod held at Swansea in 1925 and second in the National Eisteddfod held at Pwllheli in the same year; 'Dysgub y Dail' (a song for a baritone), 1925, the words by Crwys; 'Hiraeth' (a song for a soprano), 1926, the words by Eifion Wyn; 'Kyrie Eleison' (a setting for chorus, baritone solo and string-orchestra), the words by Robert Bryan, presented for his BMus Degree in 1926; 'Hiraeth' (a song for a soprano), 1926, words by Eifion Wyn; 'Dance Measure' (for string, orchestra and piano), 1928; an anthem 'O Feddyg Da' for mixed voices, 1929, words by J. T. Job; and 'Scherzo', undated.
Additional papers of Irwyn Walters, musician and administrator, including the minute book of Côr Ebenezer, Ammanford (conducted by David Walters, his grandfather), 1893-98; academic certificates awarded to Irwyn Walters, 1925-1926 (University of Wales, Aberystwyth and University of London); concert programmes of the Franco-Welsh Orchestra, the Welsh Philharmonic Orchestra and the London Symphony Orchestra, all conducted by him; programmes of the Swansea Festival Orchestra, he was its musical director; papers relating to the National Youth Orchestra of Wales, 1946-1957, including concert programmes, a scrapbook relating to the orchestra’s activities, ‘Some reflections on the inception, growth and significance of the National Youth Orchestra of Wales by the founder, Irwyn R. Walters’; and a cartoon strip entitled ‘Hiawatha’s departure’ depicting him conducting a performance from Hiawatha’s wedding feast’ as a teacher at Stafford in 1932.
