Reginald Ernest Redman Collection

The Redman collection contains manuscript writings, typed scripts of broadcast programmes, lecture notes, concert programmes, lists of compositions, newspaper cuttings, festival adjudication notes, correspondence, and musical scores either owned or written by Redman.

Reginald Ernest Redman was born in 1892, and excelled in the study of the history and philosophy of music, as well as its composition. A student of opera, choral works, and Chinese classical music in particular, Redman lectured on these topics to Choral Societies, interested groups, and for broadcast throughout the 1950s. He also composed a great deal of incidental music and scores for silent films such as The Ring of Jade and a number of British Broadcasting Corporation projects in both radio and television. He also wrote prose and poetry, as well as adapting some prose and poetic works to music for concert and broadcast purposes. Redman died in 1972 at the age of 80.
