Scope and Content

The stave heads are in the form of the letters L and P intertwined, standing for Leicester Polytechnic. A similar logo featured on letterheads and marketing materials of the time.

Administrative / Biographical History

During a traditional graduation ceremony governors, members of the academic board, professors and official guests process into the ceremony venue led by officials carrying ceremonial regalia, such as a mace or a staff. These feature ornamentation which reflects the heraldry or identity of the institution.

According to contemporary Degree Award ceremony brochures, the Leicester Polytechnic staves were designed by Neil Harding and made in-house by Neil Harding, Czes Bernacki and John Kitto. Leicester Polytechnic become a university in 1992, and changed its name to De Montfort University at which point the staves were replaced with a new design.
