Scope and Content

An undated description of Miss Granville-Smith's time in India and Kashmir, 178 pages, beginning with her departure from England on 25 August 1945, and covering a period of 22 months, ending with her return on 7 July 1947. The memoir was originally written in the form of round robin letters to her family, often as a diary covering several weeks of news. These letters were circulated to friends and relations, and for this reason they mention mutual friends and organisations. There are photographs and illustrations inserted into the text, which are indexed at the beginning. There are also accompanying biographical notes on the author, a note on people mentioned in the memoir and a letter from Miss Granville-Smith to Terry Barringer, R.C.S. Librarian, 6 May 1990, identifying people in Kashmir mentioned in her account.

Administrative / Biographical History

Miss R. Granville-Smith worked in the Mildmay Mission Hospital Outpatients for a few years before the Second World War. She ran Girl Guide Companies, Packs and Sunday Schools, and during the war worked at the London Medical Mission and Islington Medical Missions. In 1945 she was employed at the Mission Hospital at Tank in the North-West Frontier Province, India. She visited Mission hospitals and schools in India and Kashmir, and stayed with friends in different parts of the sub-continent. During this time she visited the Pesshar Prison. After her return to England she became a prison visitor.
