Copies of Dr Brewin’s books, book chapters, articles, published letters and book reviews on a range of topics; photographs; manuscripts, correspondence, notes, annotated articles, and patient case histories relating to alcohol intolerance and taste change; clinical images relating to individual patients; images and slides for clinical and non-clinical teaching.

Administrative / Biographical History

Dr Thurstan Brewin was for many years a consultant oncologist in Glasgow and among his many other roles he was Editor of the Bulletin of the Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Glasgow. He was strongly committed to clinical research and in particular he studied in great detail alcohol intolerance and changes in taste and appetite in patients with cancer. A major part of this archive is concerned with his records of these phenomena and his research into possible explanations.

The papers and other documents in this archive were selected and sorted after Dr Brewin’s death by his friend, Dr Gareth Rees.

Arrangement

Dr Brewin stored his papers in folders by subject, and these folders were sorted into four distinct groups by Dr Rees after Dr Brewin’s death. These groups now form the four series in the collection, with Dr Brewin’s folders forming the files within each series.

Access Information

Some items in this collection may contain sensitive or confidential patient information relating to living individuals. Access to such records is closed for the lifetime of the individual concerned. Access to all items is at the discretion of the College’s Heritage staff.
