Railway plans and papers, 1843-1966, comprising Chester and Holyhead Railway plans, 1844-1961, Acts of Parliament, 1845-1937, and papers, 1846-1966; Chester and Holyhead and branch railways general plans, 1900-[c. 1920], plans of the Signals and Telegraph Department, 1876-1934, branch railways plans and papers, 1847-1965, and acts, 1865-1927; plans of Great Western Railway branches and lines in North Wales, [c. 1866]-1944; Wrexham, Mold and Connah's Quay Railway plans, [early 20th century]-1962, Acts, 1882-1888, and papers, 1918-[c. 1965]; plans relating to various independent narrow-gauge railways in North Wales, 1873-1923; guide books, 1879-[c. 1944]; and guide book maps, [19th century]-[20th century].

R. J. Dean (fl. 1969-1980) collected plans of many railway companies. In 1923, railway companies in Britain were amalgamated into four main groups, three of which operated lines in Wales. The London and North Western Railway, which became part of the London, Midland and Scottish Railway (LMS) in 1923, operated the Chester and Holyhead Railway, and various branch railways in north Wales. The Great Western Railway (GWR) ran several lines in north and mid Wales. The Wrexham, Mold and Connah's Quay Railway had been acquired by Great Central Railways in 1904 and became part of London and North Eastern Railway (LNER) in 1923. Following nationalisation of the railways in 1946, north and mid Wales became part of British Railways, London Midland Region. Dean's main interests were the pre-1923 standard- and narrow-gauge railways.

Arranged into the following: London & North Western Railway; Great Western Railway; London & North Eastern Railway; independent narrow-gauge railways; and miscellaneous.

The railways are arranged in the collection according to their 1923 grouping (amalgamation into four main groups, three of which operated in Wales). This arrangement is also adopted for plans and papers after 1946 (when nationalisation resulted in north and mid Wales becoming part of British Railways - London Midland Region). Those narrow-gauge railways which remained independent are listed separately.
