James Hogg (c.1770-1835) earnt his living as a shepherd or sheep-farmer for most of his life but also wrote prolifically, producing poems, novels, articles and compiling collections of Scottish folk songs. He was known as the Ettrick shepherd as he was born and raised in the Ettrick valley in Selkirkshire.
