The papers were received in two separate deposits:
-1940/01 - Research material collated by William Roberts, including correspondence, often with images of portraits attached, notes, press cuttings and other published material, relating to the following artists: Sir Thomas Lawrence (1769-1830); Thomas Gainsborough (bap. 1727-1788); John Opie (1761-1807); George Romney (1734-1802); Sir Joshua Reynolds (1723-1792); Francis Cotes (1726-1770); John Hoppner (1758-1810); Sir William Beechey (1753-1839); William Owen (1769-1825) and Sir Henry Raeburn (1756-1823)
-1988/01 - Papers compiled and collected by William Roberts relating to Sir Thomas Lawrence, including correspondence to Roberts concerning Lawrence, reproductions of works by Lawrence ranging from engravings to reproductions in magazines, newspaper cuttings relating to Lawrence, notes thought to be by Roberts, and printed poetry some of which relates to Lawrence's sitters. Also included is a letter from William Angerstein to Thomas Campbell concerning Sir Thomas Lawrence.
