Administrative / Biographical History
Born in Kenya, Gundara attended the Duke of Gloucester School, an Indian grammar school, in Nairobi. His further education took place in the United States, Canada and Scotland. His first degree was from Bowdoin College, Maine followed by an MA in Political Science and International Relations from McGill University, Quebec. He was later awarded a PhD by the University of Edinburgh for his thesis entitled ‘British Extra-Territorial Jurisdiction in 19th century Zanzibar’.
Gundara had strong links with the London Borough of Islington where he taught for a spell as a teacher at Starcross School. He was also Education Officer for the Islington Committee for Community Relations and ILEA Multi-Ethnic Liaison Officer for Islington. In 1979 when the ILEA and the Institute of Education decided to set up a Centre for Multicultural [later Intercultural] Education he was appointed its director and later a Professor of Education. He was also holder of a UNESCO Chair in International Studies and Teacher Education at the IOE and founder and President of the International Association for Intercultural Education (IAIE). He was also appointed a Fellow of the Royal Society in 1990.
He shared his ideas about interculturalism and other research interests at conferences throughout the world and published widely on human rights, education and multicultural studies. He also maintained an active interest in colonialism, particularly in Africa.
