Administrative / Biographical History

Professor William Smart, was born in Barrhead, Renfrewshire, Scotland in 1853 . He received his MA from the University of Glasgow, Scotland in 1882 . According to matriculation records, he studied moral philosophy and mathematics in 1880-1881 , and in 1881-1882 , he studied natural philosophy. It appears he received his LLD in 1893  and his DPhil in 1896 . He lectured at the University of Glasgow at this time, so it would appear that he obtained his qualifications there. In 1896 , Smart was appointed Adam Smith Professor of Political Economy at the University of Glasgow. He died in 1915 .
