Administrative / Biographical History

Elizabeth McLoughlin was born in Landport, Portsmouth in 1915. She spent a most of her childhood in Ireland before travelling to London to train as a nurse aged 18 (c.1933). She did her general nursing training in North Middlesex Hospital for three years, spent two years training as a fever nurse in Stockwell Hospital and a year and a half training as a midwife in Hampstead Hospital. The General Nursing Council of England and Wales certified her as a fever nurse in 1937 and she received her Central Midwife Board certificate in 1950. She worked as a nurse in various London hospitals throughout the 1940s, including North Middlesex, Amersham, St. James’, New End Hospital and an RAF Hospital. In 1950 she travelled to New Zealand where she worked as a nurse and midwife. She returned to England c. 1959 where she continued to work as a nurse and midwife in Oxfordshire. She was re-enrolled onto the General Nursing Council for England and Wales’ nursing register in 1959. In the 1970s she worked as a midwifery community tutor in West Oxfordshire with Nurse Jean Nulty (C925).
