NPG - Staff Newsletters

File includes staff newsletters in several incarnations. In its current form, titled 'Up Close and Personnel', information and news are organised by department. The publication includes Gallery-wide news and a personnel section in which staff leavers and new starters are recorded. Also includes a notice board area in which staff can post general information of interest.

In December 1994 the first staff newsletter - "The NPG newsletter" - was launched. Its aim was to improve internal communication: specifically to increase the level of understanding among staff of events in each area of Gallery's work. The newsletter was organised by the Development Office and IT staff, but contributions came from across the Gallery. Department heads had editorial responsibility for content in their area. The newsletter was issued fortnightly.

The standard format at this time was an A3 page folded to create four A4 pages of content. The content was typically structured as follows:
- front page: major news
- inside left: curatorial information including news on acquisition, exhibitions, displays and the Archive
- inside right - non-curatorial information including Publications; Education; Personnel & Development information
- back page - education programme highlights; events diary and major press cuttings

The NPG newsletter ran in this format for two years. However, it was time-consuming to organise and - due to pressures on staff time - the last issue was produced in 1996.

In 2000 the staff newsletter was re-launched under the new title "National Portrait Gallery Information". This was an expanded monthly format with similar focus across Gallery departments but with fewer graphic elements. It ran in this guise until 2005 when it was renamed "Up Close & Personnel".
