Papers relating to People's College, Nottingham, 1854-1878

The collection contains correspondence and other manuscript items relating to People's College, Nottingham. They include the following: a letter from M[atthew] Arnold to the Rev. B. Carpenter declining an offer to examine schools for the College, 6 May 1954; minutes of directors of the College, 14 January 1878; petition to the directors of the College by James Bucknall, John Goodson and Robert Tompkin to complain that the College was at risk of catering for the middle rather than the working class, undated, c. 1878; and letters between Michael Boork, the University of Nottingham's Special Collections librarian and the Department of Education and Science concerning the possible identification of 'M. Arnold' as Matthew Arnold, 18 February-5 March 1973.

People's College, Nottingham was established in about 1846 to provide an economical and secular education for the children of working-class families in the city.
