Scope and Content
Administrative / Biographical History
Born in 1917 in Budapest, André Deutsch was one of a group of central European emigres - including George Weidenfeld and Paul Hamlyn - who played an important role in the development of British publishing between the 1950s and the 1980s. Towards the end of World War II, Deutsch founded his first publishing company, Allan Wingate. In the early 1950s, however, he resigned from the Wingate company and went on to establish André Deutsch Ltd which published some of the most important names in post war fiction, including John Updike, V.S.Naipaul, Philip Roth and Norman Mailer. He died in 2000.
André Deutsch Ltd was acquired by the Carlton Publishing Group.
