Administrative / Biographical History

A committee to consider providing a hospital in Mexborough was established in July 1889. Shortly afterwards, it applied to Andrew Montagu of Melton Park to ask him to donate a site for a small building to house a six-bed hospital. Montagu offered instead to provide the building himself and convey it to the committee on a long lease at a nominal rent. This hospital, which initially contained fourteen beds, was opened in Bank Street in 1890. The hospital moved to new premises in Adwick Road, Mexborough in 1905 with the aid of a substantial gift from F. J. O. Montagu. No records, however, appear to have survived earlier than 1923, apart from the annual reports. These are retained at the hospital, but microfrom copies are available at Doncaster Archives.

The early history of the hospital is outlined in D M Wilson, 'A Short History of the Montagu Hospital, Mexborough, 1889-1925' (Mexborough, 1926), a copy of which is available at Doncaster Archives.

There is a description of the hospital staff and premises in the Ministry of Health Hospital Survey: The Hospital Services of the Sheffield and East Midlands Area (1945), which can be found in the archives of the Doncaster Royal Infirmary (Doncaster Archives reference HR2/4/45, pages 25 and 88).

A proposal by the Trent Regional Health Authority in 1979 to close emergency and maternity services at Mexborough Montagu Hospital led to a vigorous local campaign against the plans (See the papers of J E MacFarlane, Doncaster Archives reference DD/MF/11/1-15 and Doncaster Community Health Council, Doncaster Archives reference CHC/1/10).

A microfilm copy of the annual reports of the hospital from 1890 to 1943 can be found at Doncaster Archives reference DZMZ/51.
