Scope and Content
Administrative / Biographical History
The Local Government Act 1894 established urban and rural district councils, including Cemaes Rural District Council (also spelled Cemais), Haverfordwest Rural District Council, and Fishguard and Goodwick Urban District Council, Pembrokeshire. Urban and Rural District Councils were abolished in 1974, and Preseli District Council was established, responsible for local administration, including local planning, housing, environmental health, cemeteries and leisure services. The District Councils were replaced by unitary authorities in 1996. The Super Cinema, Haverfordwest, became later known as the County Theatre; it became the responsibility of Preseli District Council, and was demolished in 1980.
