Administrative / Biographical History

The General Strike was called by the Trades Union Congress (T.U.C.) in support of a strike by coal miners over their wages and working hours. Workers in key industries such as the railways, docks, and iron and steel works were called out, with the intention of causing difficulties for the rest of the economy. The strike began on 3 May 1926 and was called off on 12 May.

Maintenance workers in the press industry on Fleet Street went on strike for a month in March and April 1955 over wage proposals. All of the newspapers printed in London (twelve daily and ten Sunday papers) ceased production until the strike ended on 20 April 1955.
