Scope and Content

The collection contains papers relating to events run by the Haggs Farm Preservation Society, newscuttings relating to their activities, and photographs and copy plans of the farm.

It also contains research papers compiled by Clive Leivers relating to the history of the farm and its residents, compiled from census material and the Melbourne Estate records held at Nottinghamshire Archives.

The collection also includes papers relating to the Chambers family's later home Arno Vale Farm, old photographs of the surrounding area, etc.

Administrative / Biographical History

Haggs Farm on the edge of the village of Underwood, Nottinghamshire, was home to the family of Jessie Chambers, childhood friend of D.H. Lawrence. Concerns over the deterioration of the farm arose in the 1960s and individuals made attempts to highlight the need to preserve the farm. An organised group named the 'Haggs Association' was established in 1985, and later became the 'Haggs Farm Preservation Society'.
