Scope and Content

Full studio recording script of radio drama, 'How not to run a foreign policy', a political comedy about Neville Chamberlain's foreign policy in the run up to the Second World War, written by John Fletcher, 2006. The play was broadcast as the Afternoon Play on BBC Radio 4, 4 June 2007. The folder contains a typescript of 58 pages.

Administrative / Biographical History

John Fletcher is the author of a number of radio plays and dramatisations.

The context of this play is the political relationship between Britain and the European dictatorships of Italy and Germany in early 1938, the role of Sir Joseph Ball, director of the Conservative Research Department in the negotiations with Grandi, the Italian Ambassador in London and the subsequent resignation of Anthony Eden as Foreign Secretary over Neville Chamberlain's appeasement policy towards Hitler and Mussolini.

The cast included Clive Merrison as Neville Chamberlain, Michael Fenton Stevens as Joseph Ball, Laurence Fox as Guy Burgess and David Holt as Anthony Eden
