This collection consists of a phone book (1889) and secretariat records (1886-1901) including legal records and a directors' report.

Administrative / Biographical History

The Northern District Telephone Company was formed as a subsidiary of the United Telephone Company (UTC) on 13 December 1881 covering Westmorland, Cumberland, Northumberland and parts of Durham and Scotland. The UTC had already commenced operations in Sunderland and Newcastle with only the Post Office for competition. It was absorbed by the National Telephone Company on 30 April 1890.
