Correspondence and papers of the Very Rev. John Lee, Principal of Edinburgh University, with the material collected by him. Includes correspondence, mainly relating to church and university affairs, 1791-1859; correspondence of the General Assembly of the Church of Scotland from 1638; extracts made by him, chiefly from kirk session records 17th-19th century; notebooks, addresses and literary MSS; collected MSS incl papers of and relating to Alexander Carlyle.

Lee, John (1779-1859), principal of Edinburgh University, entered Edinburgh University, 1794; MD, 1801; licensed as a preacher, 1807; professor of church history at St Mary's College, St Andrews, 1812-21; minister of the Canongate Church, Edinburgh, 1821; DD, St Andrews, 1821; chaplain-in-ordinary to the king, 1830; principal of Edinburgh University, 1840-59; professor of divinity, 1843-59; especially learned in Scottish literary and ecclesiastical history.

Presented, 1942, by Mrs. Lee, the Principal's granddaughter. The Church of Scotland has placed those of the papers which are its property in the National Library on permanent deposit.
