Administrative / Biographical History

The National Union of Sheet Metal Workers & Coppersmiths: Glasgow Branch, was founded in Glasgow, Scotland, in c1934  as the National Union of Sheet Metal Workers & Braziers: Glasgow Branch. As well as acting as a collective voice for the Braziers and Sheet Metal Workers of Glasgow in disputes and discussions concerning issues such as pay, working conditions and industrial action, the Union also provided illness and unemployment benefit to workers, pensions, helped with funeral expenses and provided loans to its members. Prior to 1934, the Scottish Sheet Metal Workers’ & Braziers’ Friendly & Protective Society had undertaken this role and when the society became affiliated to the National Union and changed its name c1934 , its finances were placed into a Trust managed by the new branch of the Union. In 1934, the branch held a march through Glasgow to protest at the governments Unemployment Insurance Bill.

A committee consisting of a president, treasurer, money steward and secretary managed the branch. The committee met monthly and then later weekly to discuss relevant issues concerning its members and administration, and these meeting were held in Burnbank Gardens, Glasgow.

From at least 1954 , a screening committee was convened to which potential members of the branch had to apply.

By 1962, the Union had changed its name to the National Union of Sheet Metal Workers & Coppersmiths. In the 1980s  , this Union merged with the Technical Administrative & Supervisory Staffs union (TASS) which in turn amalgamated with the Association of Scientific, Technical and Managerial Staffs (ASTMS) in January 1988 to form the Manufacturing, Science & Finance union (MSF).
