Scope and Content

Bennett's papers relate to his wide interests in Scottish history, law and culture, and include notes, copied extracts from published books, correspondence and other papers (including some personal and professional material, as well as some papers relating to University business). In addition, he was a keen amateur poet and artist, interests which are also well represented in the collection. There are albums of newspaper articles written by Bennett and others, 1910s-1930s.

The photographs within the collection include images by Thomas Rodger, John Fairweather, John Dryburgh, Valentines of Dundee and George Washington Wilson of Aberdeen and include photographs of golf, the university buildings and events as well as family subjects. Some watercolours are also to be found in the collection.

Administrative / Biographical History

Andrew Bennett (1871-1958) was Secretary of the Court, Senatus Academicus and General Council of the University of St Andrews, and acted as Registrar and Law Agent to the University from 1903 to 1941. He lived all his life in St Andrews.
