Scope and Content

The collection is comprised of various files of copy minutes, reports and correspondence from a number of Trent Vale Hospital Management Group committees including the Management Committee (1970-74), Patient Care Committee (1970-74), Services Committee and Hospital and General Purposes Committee (1972-1974), and Mapperley and Saxondale Hospital Visiting Panels (1970-74). Sheffield Regional Hospital Board planning papers are also present (1967-1969). The files appear to have been collected by Dr W.L. Jones, Chairman of the Group Medical Advisory Committee of Trent Vale Hospital Mangement Committee.

The second part of the collection (Uht F 18-27) is largely made up of files collected by Dr Jones as a member of Joint Working Group 9 of the Joint Liaison Committee for the reorganisation of Nottinghamshire Area Health Authority, 1972-1974.

Administrative / Biographical History

In 1948, with the advent of the National Health Service, the hospitals in Nottinghamshire were grouped under the Sheffield Regional Hospital Board. The large area covered by the Regional Board included Derby, Leicester and Lincoln in addition to Sheffield and Rotherham. The various hospitals dealing with mental health in the Nottingham area, including Saxondale Hospital, Mapperley Hospital, St Ann's, St Francis, Coppice, Aston Hall, Balderton Hospital and Westdale Hospital, were grouped under the Nottingham No. 3 and Nottingham No. 4 Hospital Management Committees. These two committees amalgamated in 1970 to form the Trent Vale Hospital Management Committee.

In 1974, following the White Paper of 1972, the Trent Regional Health Authority came into being, replacing the former Sheffield Regional Hospital Board. The 1974 reorganisation brought hospitals under the control of Area Health Authorities accountable to Regional Health Authorities. Within the Trent Region the former Trent Vale Hospital Management Committee became part of the Nottinghamshire Area Health Authority (Teaching) South Nottingham District, which was itself superseded in 1982 by the Nottingham Health Authority.

Dr W.L. Jones was a consultant psychiatrist at St Ann's Hospital (Mapperley Hospital), Nottingham, and Chairman of the Group Medical Advisory Committee. He attended Trent Vale Hospital Mangement Committee meetings. All the files in this collection appear to have been collected by him in his capacity as Chairman of the Group Medical Advisory Committee.

Arrangement

The papers are arranged according to Committees within the Trent Vale Hospital Management Group, with papers relating to NHS reorganisation placed at the end.
