Scope and Content

The papers of Sir Neil Marten served a dual function: they were the private papers of a major protagonist of opposition to Britain's membership of the EEC and the working papers for a projected book. The papers consist of:

  • Correspondence and papers relating to organizations opposed to Britain's membership of the EEC
  • Files of correspondence on various political topics, relating to the EEC, arranged by subject
  • General correspondence mainly relating to opposition to the EEC, but including letters relating to Vietnam and Rhodesia, arranged chronologically
  • Printed material
  • Newspapers

Administrative / Biographical History

Sir Neil Marten (1916-1986) was Conservative MP for Banbury, 1959-83, and Chairman of the National Referendum Campaign, 1975. Sir Neil was a leading opponent of Britain's membership of the European Economic Community (EEC). After his retirement as Conservative MP for Banbury in 1983, he planned to write a book on the topic, but he died before work could begin.
