Administrative / Biographical History

The Scottish National Joint Council for the Woven Wire Industry first met on 29 June 1943  in Glasgow, Scotland. The Council was formed to determine on a national basis the rates of pay, hours of labour and conditions of employment of workers in the Woven Wire Manufacturing Industry. The Council was made up of representatives from the Scottish Federation of Woven Wire Manufacturers , the National Union of General & Municipal Workers and the Transport & General Workers Union. The constitution of October 1943  stated that the Council should consist of not more than 12 members - half employers' representatives and half operatives' representatives and that they should be appointed annually. General meetings were held every 2 months. Sub-committees were appointed when required to deal with specific issues such as the employment and training of juveniles. From 21 October 1947 the Council's name appears in the minutes as Scottish Joint Industrial Council for the Woven Wire Industry although no change is made to the name in the constitution. At the annual general meeting on 14 October 1969  a number of members intimated their resignations and as a result the Council ceased to exist following this meeting. The minutes of the apprenticeship and training sub-committee continue until it too was wound up on 19 June 1970  .
