Scope and Content

The archive contains material relating to Burton-in-Lonsdale and the surrounding area. It specialises in maps, local history and pottery of the vicinity.

Administrative / Biographical History

Stanley Lawrence was born in the mid-1920s. He was an ex-headmaster of Burton-in-Lonsdale Endowed School and a local historian who became interested in the history of Burton-in-Lonsdale and its surrounding area in the late 1940s.

The archive consists of material created and collected by him about Burton-in-Lonsdale and villages on the Yorkshire/Lancashire border from the 1600s to the 1900s, although it is predominantly 19th and 20th century material.

Custodial History

This collection was donated by Stanley Lawrence from his local history research for the use of other researchers interested in the Burton-in-Lonsdale history and locality. He gave all rights over to the University for them to use as they see fit.
