Administrative / Biographical History
Charles Mann Fleming was born in Glasgow on 01 March 1904 , son of John Somerville Fleming and Christina Taylor Gerard. In 1930 he married Margaret Hamilton Barrie Simpson and had one daughter.
He was educated at Hillhead High School and the University of Glasgow. He graduated MA in 1924 , MB ChB in 1929 and MD 1933 . His MD thesis was entitled Diagnosis of dyspepsia in general practice . He also received MRCPEd 1945, FRCPEd 1952, FRFPS (G) 1959, FRCPGlas 1962, Hon FRCGP 1964. He was Regional Medical Officer and then Hospital Officer for the Eastern District of Scotland 1937 to 1946 and then Principal Medical Officer for Scotland 1946-1959 . He received the CBE in 1964 .
He was Dean of the Faculty of Medicine at the University of Glasgow from 1959-1970 and Dean of Postgraduate Medicine 1970 to 1972. He was Emeritus Professor of Administrative Medicine at the University of Glasgow from 1971 . He lectured widely, wrote many articles for medical journals, and had a reputation as an excellent and humorous after dinner speaker. He travelled extensively in Europe and America and kept very informative diaries on medical facilities and life in general in the countries he visited. As Dean of the Faculty of Medicine he was involved in the 1960s with the University of East Africa, a body to which Glasgow University gave considerable assistance. He also served on the Royal Commission on Medical Education from 1965-1968 . Charles Mann Fleming died in 1985 .
