Scope and Content

Administrative papers and case files from the Isle of Man Billeting Notices (Appeals Tribunal).

Administrative papers include:

- a letter from the Government Secretary to the Secretary of the Appellate Tribunal under the National Service Acts informing him of the appointment of His Honour Deemster Cain to be Chairman of the Appellate Tribunal on the Isle of Man;

- a file titled 'Billeting Notices (Appeal) Tribunal. The Defence (General) Regulations (Isle of Man) 1939. Constitution of Tribunal'.

The file contains copies of Regulation 22 of the Defence (General) Regulations (Isle of Man) 1939 describing the constitution of a tribunal for the purpose of hearing complaints in respect of billeting notices served on the occupiers of premises.

Case files cover the appeals of six individuals or companies heard by the Billeting Notices (Appeals) Tribunal between 1941-1944.

The Billeting Notices (Appeals) Tribunal for the Isle of Man was established under the provisions of the Defence (General) Regulations (Isle of Man) 1939.

Appraisal Information

The records in this collection were selected for permanent preservation as part of Public Record Office work on the Isle of Man Courts of Justice Part 1 retention schedule, which was completed and approved in June 2018.

Custodial History

These records were stored at the Isle of Man Public Record Office, Unit 3 Spring Valley, Braddan by the Isle of Man General Registry prior to their full transfer and accession into the Isle of Man Public Record Office archive collections. They were examined in June 2018 by Angela Skitt, Public Records Officer as part of selection work on existing General Registry records at the Public Record Office and were given the temporary reference code Q19. They were fully transferred to the IOMPRO under section 3(4) of the Public Records Act 1999 on 1 August 2018 with the agreement of the Director of Courts and Tribunals and Assistant Chief Registrar.
