Scope and Content

Agorodd Ysgol Genedlaethol Eglwysbach yn 1835.

Cafodd ystafelloedd dosbarth gwreiddiol yr ysgol eu hadeiladu yn 1835 gan grŵp o 4 gŵr arweiniol yn yr ardal, gan gynnwys y ficer David Owen, i ddarparu addysg am ddim i blant tlawd. Roedd yn ysgol ‘Genedlaethol’ Eglwys Lloegr. Richard Beverley oedd y pennaeth o 1837 i 1869 a soniwyd am yr ysgol yn y ‘Llyfrau Glas’ drwg-enwog 1847 – ar gyflwr addysg yng Nghymru.

Ar ôl 1863 roedd yn ofynnol i benaethiaid yn ôl y gyfraith i gofnodi gwaith beunyddiol eu hysgol mewn llyfr log. Fodd bynnag, mae’r llyfrau log ar gyfer ysgol genedlaethol Eglwysbach yn anghyflawn. Mae’r llyfr log cyntaf ar gael wedi’i ddyddio o 1 Mai 1895 a bryd hynny roedd yr ysgol yn gymysgedd o ysgol plant iau a babanod gyda120 ysgolhaig ar y gofrestr. Y pennaeth cyntaf oedd John J Jones yn y swydd tan 1897 a’i olynydd oedd Robert J Mulholland a oedd yn bennaeth tan 1909. Roedd adroddiad Arolygiaeth ei Mawrhydi ym mis Gorffennaf 1897 yn dangos bod yr ysgol ar ei hôl hi gydag amodau gwael heb ddŵr yn yr ysgol a dim tai bach. Roedd pwysau salwch, tywydd ac adeilad gwael bob amser yn effeithio ar bresenoldeb yn yr ysgol.

Roedd adroddiadau Arolygiaeth Ei Mawrhydi 1903 yn derbyn bod absenoldeb ysgolheigion yn effeithio ar gynnydd yr ysgol. (ED/LB/27/2 tudalen 259).

Erbyn 1919 roedd yna dal 110 ysgolhaig ar y gofrestr ond ym mis Rhagfyr y flwyddyn honno roedd yna dân yn yr ysgol gan fod gofalwr wedi anghofio symud bwced o ludw poeth allan o’r adeilad. Gwelwyd llawer o welliannau yng nghyflwr adeilad yr ysgol ac amwynderau yn ystod y cyfnod hwn. Roedd pared gwydr wedi’i adeiladu ym mhrif ystafell yr ysgol ac o’r diwedd roedd yna gae chwarae pwrpasol wrth i Arolygiaeth Ei Mawrhydi feirniadu'r ffaith bod yr ysgolheigion yn chwarae ar y ffordd. Cafodd y 2 dŷ bach presennol gyda seddi dwbl i fechgyn, merched a phlant bach eu newid hefyd.

Fodd bynnag erbyn 1941 pan oedd yna 56 ysgolhaig ar y gofrestr doedd yna ddim dŵr yfed a golchi yn yr ysgol. Yn 1943 roedd ceudai a bwcedi yn dal i gael eu defnyddio.

Yn 2017, roedd yr adeilad gwreiddiol dros 180 oed ac yn un o’r ysgolion cynradd hynaf yng Nghonwy ac yn adeilad rhestredig Gradd II. Bellach mae’n Ysgol a Reolir yn Wirfoddol gan yr Eglwys yng Nghymru. Mae yna 74 disgybl a addysgir drwy gyfrwng y Gymraeg.

Eglwysbach National School opened in 1835.

The original school classrooms were built in 1835 by a group of 4 leading men in the area, including the vicar David Owen, to provide free education for poor children. It was a Church of England ‘National’ school. Richard Beverley was the head teacher from 1837 to 1869 and the school was mentioned in the notorious ‘Blue Books’ of 1847 – on the state of education in Wales.

After 1863 all schoolmasters were required by law to record the day to day business of their schools in log books. However the log books for Eglwysbach National school are incomplete. The first log book available is dated from 1st May 1895 and at that point the school was a mixed junior and infant school with 120 scholars on roll. The first head teacher was John J Jones in post till 1897 and succeeded by Robert J Mulholland who was head teacher until 1909. A HMI report of July 1897 found the school backward and with poor conditions with no water laid on to the school and no lavatories. Illness, weather, and poor building pressures always affected school attendance.

HMI reports of 1903 accepted that school progress was interrupted by absences of scholars. (ED/LB/27/2 page 259).

By 1919 there were still 110 scholars on roll but in December that year there was a fire at the school as the caretaker had neglected to remove a bucket of red hot ashes out of the building. This period saw great improvements in the condition and amenities of the school building. The main school room had a glass partition erected and at long last a proper playground was installed as HMI had criticised the fact that the scholars played in the road. The existing 2 latrine closets with double seats for boys, girls and infants were also replaced.

However by 1941 when there were 56 scholars on roll there was still no water for drinking and washing piped to the school. In 1943 privies and buckets were still in use.

In 2017, the original building is over 180 years old and one of the oldest primary schools in Conwy and is Grade II listed. It is now a Church in Wales Voluntary Controlled School. It has 74 pupils taught through the medium of Welsh.
