Cwmcynfelyn Estate Records,

Family papers and estate records of the Williams family of Cwmcynfelyn, Cardiganshire, comprising rentals, 1833-[1885], valuations, [1849]-1879, financial papers, 1826-1899, deeds of the Cwmcynfelyn estate in north Cardiganshire, and in the parish of Machynlleth, Montgomeryshire 1773-1886, deeds relating to Penpompren in Llanfihangel Genau'r-glyn, 1724-1791 (including a schedule of deeds dating back to 1694), which probably found their way to Cwmcynfelyn through the marriage of Matthew Davies Williams of Cwmcynfelyn and Susanna Griffith in 1828; papers relating to the Donisthorpe and Mapperley collieries, Leicestershire, 1874-1899; papers relating to the Gogerddan estate, Cardiganshire, accumulated by George Griffiths Williams as agent until his retirement, 1852-1895; and personal papers of Mathew Davies Williams, 1821-1864.

Mathew Evans, a solicitor and twice mayor of Aberystwyth (1734 and 1760) is the first recorded occupier of Cwmcynfelyn. He left his estate to his nephew, Mathew Davies of Wileirog-uchaf (sheriff of Cardiganshire in 1790). Mathew Davies married Jane, daughter of Roderick Richards of Plas Penglais, Aberystwyth, and had two daughters and co-heiresses. Jane, the eldest, married Isaac Lloyd Williams (1771-1846) of Lincolns Inn, the son of David Williams of Ty'n-y-wern and Ystrad Teilo in the parish of Llanrhystud, Cardiganshire. Isaac was succeeded by his eldest son, Mathew Davies Williams (1800-1860), who sold parts of the estate to the Gogerddan estate. Cwmcynfelyn appears to have passed out of the hands of the Williams family by 1881.

Clients' deeds, including Coke of Holkam and the Dukes of Montagu, inherited by Isaac Lloyd Williams from his predecessors in chambers at 7 and 8 Serles Court (now New Square), Lincolns Inn, appear to have been removed from chambers to Cwmcynfelyn by him sometime between 1818 and 1846 These were removed from the original deposit on grounds of provenance by NLW in 1996 and are now designated Peniston Lamb (Lincoln's Inn) Deeds.

Accruals are not expected.
