The material in the archive falls into two principal categories: material recording the processes of the planning, designing, printing and publication of books and ephemera by Simon Lawrence, principally through the Fleece Press; also material relating to the financial operation of the Fleece Press.
By far the largest part of the archive (FLE/1) is a series of discreet sub-series which record all aspects of the production and publication of individual books. This material includes correspondence with those contributing to the production and publication of the books: authors; engravers of wood blocks to be printed as illustrations; through lending material from which prints were made; as bookbinders and paper makers; as typesetter; as advisors; etc. The correspondence also includes material concerned with the books after publication. This series also includes: proof sheets of prints and text; annotated texts; manuscript notes by Simon Lawrence; paste-up versions of books; make-readies for prints; sample paper and bindings.
Further series in the archive include: material similar to that within FLE/1 but recording the development of projects which have not yet or did not reach the stage of publication (FLE/2); collections, both loose and in bound volumes, of printed ephemera produced, principally, at the Fleece Press and compiled by Simon Lawrence (FLE/3); the records of non-book printing undertaken or commissioned by Simon Lawrence (FLE/4).
Also included are financial records of the Fleece Press (FLE/6).
Research potential
The archive would be of interest to researchers working in the fields of: the history of the private press in England in the late twentieth and early twenty-first centuries; wood engraving in the UK in the twentieth and early twenty-first centuries, particularly the work of Margaret Wells (FLE/1/8), Leon Underwood (FLE/1/12), Claughton Pellew (FLE/1/14), Agnes Miller Parker (FLE/1/26), Joan Hassall (FLE/1/28), Paul Nash (FLE/1/29), Reynolds Stone (FLE/1/32), John Buckland Wright (FLE/1/35 and 39) and Gwen Raverat (FLE/1/43); the processes of hand printing and letterpress printing; the production and publication of limited edition books in England in the late twentieth and early twenty-first centuries.
