Scope and Content

  • Photographs of the construction of the Lanarkshire & Dunbartonshire Railway 1893-1898

Administrative / Biographical History

The Lanarkshire & Dunbartonshire Railway , Scotland, received its Act of Parliament in 1891  . The line provided a link between Glasgow, Scotland, and Dumbarton, West Dunbartonshire, Scotland. The line was funded by the Caledonian Railway who wanted a stake on the north bank of the river Clyde that was dominated by the North British Railway Co. The line was opened from Glasgow to Clydebank in 1896  and to Dumbarton where it joined the Helensburgh line, in 1896. The line followed the banks of the Clyde on which was a close-packed mass of engineering works, factories and shipyards, and it is no coincidence that directors from many of these businesses were on the board of the Railway. The line developed into a busy freight line with heavy, all-year-round commuter traffic. The Railway was vested in the Caledonian Railway in 1909  .
