Scope and Content

This is a collection of 12 halftone prints and two sheets of paper, which both have handwritten inscriptions in ink. The photographer was W.M.H. Ward & Co. Although there are 14 captions listed on one of the accompanying sheets of paper, only 12 prints are present. Images corresponding to captions 1, 3, and 7 are absent. There are 11 unique images, with two prints for the image which corresponds to caption 6.
The collection's creator is unknown, but this set of prints corresponds to illustrations used in the fourth edition of Charles Washington Eves' book 'The West Indies' (London: S. Low, Marston, & Co., 1897), published under the auspices of the Royal Colonial Institute. The first edition was published in 1889. At a glance, the 4th edition includes more illustrations than the first. It also has a list of illustrations immediately following the table of contents, which is not the case in the first edition. The Cambridge University Library holds a copy of each of the first and fourth editions, should researchers wish to learn more about the publications and the illustrative context in which these images were used.
