Administrative / Biographical History
Mathonwy Hughes, poet and editor, was born in Llanllyfni, Gwynedd in 1901. He worked as the assistant editor for Baner ac Amserau Cymru and was involved in the Workers Education Association, conducting evening classes in Denbigh and Mynydd Hiraethog, Denbighshire. In 1956 he won the chair at the Aberdare National Eisteddfod and in 1977 he was awarded the Sir Ifor Williams scholarship at the University College of North Wales to study the work of Gwilym R. Jones. The research work resulted in the publication of Awen Gwilym R in 1980. Amongst his other publications are four collections of poetry, four collections of essays and an autobiography, Atgofion Mab y Mynydd (1982).
Mathonwy Hughes died in 1999. A collection of articles celebrating his life and work appeared in 2001 entitled Cofio Mathonwy
