Scope and Content

This volume of autobiography starts with a description of Sydney Chapman's time at Cambridge, his work as chair of Political Economy at Manchester University and the general running of the university, the establishment of the Workers Educational Association, his work in investigating the cotton mills of Lancashire, his work at the Board of Trade and the Reserved Occupations Committee during World War I and after and becoming chief economic advisor to the government.

He also goes into great detail about European economic reconstruction after World War I, the work of the Economic Consultative Committee of the League of Nations, the teaching methods of various economists, general economic theory, philosophy, methodology in economics and tariff reform.

Sir Sydney John Chapman 1871 - 1951.

Sir John Chapman was born in Wells, Norfolk and educated at Manchester Grammar School, Owens College, Manchester and Trinity College, Cambridge. He obtained a first class degree in the moral sciences and became a lecturer in economic and political science at University College, Cardiff from 1899 - 1901. He moved back to Manchester in 1901 and was professor of political economy at Owens College, 1901 - 1917 and later Dean of the Faculty of Commerce and Administration, 1904 - 1917.

During World War I Chapman was made Assistant Secretary of the Board of Trade, 1918 - 1919 and after the war became Permanent Secretary, 1920 - 1927. His expertise was recognised when he was made Chief Economic Advisor to the government 1927 - 1932. He was knighted in 1920.

Chapman was a member of various official committees on trade and economics, a member of the Economic Committee of the League of Nations, 1927 - 1932, president in 1930, a member of the Economic Consultative Committee of the League of Nations, 1928 - 1932, a member and chairman of the Imperial Economic Committee, 1931 - 1932 and a member of the Import Duties Advisory Committee, 1932 - 1939.His publications include:
