Diocese of Norwich: Ecclesiastical Formulary

The formulary dates from the incumbency in the Norwich diocese of Bishops Edmund Scambler, William Redman and John Jegon, c.1591-1610.
The formulary contains various ecclesiastical documents, some copies of documents, and a list of Latin forms of Christian names (53 leaves). It includes (f.1) Rudolph Game, resignation from the vicarage of Oulton, 1592; (f.1v) commutation of the penance of John Bowle of Tymworth, Suffolk, and Thomas Watson of Wilton, Norfolk; (f.2) note of the marriage of John Rawlins, vicar of Bungay, with Judith Robenson, daughter of Robert Robenson, vicar of Saxlingham; (f.11v) petition of Bury St. Edmunds to license Thomas Sturge, schoolmaster, "of longe tyme a teacher of our youthe", 1571; (f.13) certificate to secure the continuance of the pension of J. Thomson, clerk, "one of the religious men of the late dissolved house of St. Osithes in... Essex"; (f.13v) certificate of death of Edward Bacon, rector of Barton Mills, Suffolk, 1566; (f.15) ordination certificates, Thomas Brome (deacon), 1568, and Edmund West (priest), 1563; (f.15v) ordination of Cuthbert Billot, Fellow of Jesus (priest), 1592; (f.19v) mandate to institute and induct William Chapman to Black Notley, Essex, vacant by the deprivation of Thomas Dawkes, 1570; (f.22) certificate of purgation for an ecclesiastical offence by Hippolyte Cowper, 1564; (f.22v) John Young, Fellow of Pembroke, petitioning Richard Cox, Bishop of Ely, for ordination by title of his fellowship, 1568; (f.26) bond of Thomas Thurlbie of Ashwicken, Norfolk, to appear before the Bishop or his appointees, 1581; (f.27) Thomas [Lord], Thomas Knyvett to the Bishop of Norwich, 1591, certificate of good character of Prudence Carleton of Garboldisham, who will marry Richard Brooke; (f.34) warrant to bind Richard Ladd and R.D. of Terrington, Norfolk, to appear before the Commission for Ecclesiastical Causes, 1591; (f.35) certificate of the inhabitants of Porringland, Norfolk, stating the good character of Thomas Yallop, accused "for some malicious purpose", 1600; (f.36) Robert Tower of Hardwick, Norfolk, seeking pardon for fornication or adultery, 1571; (f.46v) presentation of Timothy [Carion] to St. [Edmundsbury], 1593; (f.47) John Holland and Sir Thomas Holland, patrons, presenting William Coppin to the rectory of Poringland, Norfolk, vacant by the death of John Gascoigne, 1610; (f.47v) royal mandate for the institution of Edward Breviter to the rectories of Great and Little Poringland, Norfolk, 1610; and (f.48v) a list of Latin forms of Christian names.
