Scope and Content
Administrative / Biographical History
The Scottish Friendly Assurance Society was founded in 1886 as the Scottish Clerks' Association . It was established following the publication of an advertisement in the Glasgow Herald, which led to a public meeting and the appointment of a committee to oversee the setting up of a society. The objectives of the society were to be; to ensure members against loss through want of employment, sickness, old age and death and to introduce employers to clerks of good standing. The first meeting of the society was held on 14 May 1886 at Whyte's Temperance Hotel, Glasgow, although premises were soon acquired at 87 Union Street, Glasgow. Over the years the society expanded to allow individuals other than clerks to join its membership and by 1961 it had 15 branches in both Scotland and England. In May 1973 it changed its name to the Scottish Friendly Assurance Society and at this time it headquarters were located in West Regent Street, Glasgow.
