Educational Film Strips and Notes

Film strips from various educational filmstrip production companies, UK and worldwide. Many of these also have accompanying booklets with the notes that would have been used whilst the film was projected.

USA filmstrips - sent to the UK by the USA Office of War, Information and the Office of Co-ordination of Inter-American Affairs sent to selected schools - 100 film strips. These cover a range of subjects giving an overview of life in America, as well as some more specific war and industry propaganda films. Accompanying booklets for most of these films.

Educational Productions - regional geography of Great Britain, geography of Canada, Chile, Greece and 'The Zande tribe - Life of Central African Tribe' - 10 film strips. Accompanying booklets for most of these films.

Daily Mail School-Aid Dept - 7 film strips. Film strips on Australia, 'The story of the cocoa farmer', 'Latitude, longitude and time', and 'Glaciers'. Accompanying booklets for most of these films.

Student Recordings Ltd - 5 filmstrips. Exploring various countries and cities. All these have accompanying booklets.

Visual Information Service - 6 filmstrips. Exploring different climates, environments and geological features. There are accompanying booklets for three of these films.

Visual Education Centre - 5 filmstrips. Exploring different climates and geographical locations. There are accompanying booklets for three of these films.

BBC Radiovision - 2 filmstrips with accompanying booklets. One on Birmingham, the other on the Rhine-Main-Danube canal.

GBI filmstrips - 6 filmstrips. A variety of subjects, including the wool industry in Australia and various geographical subjects. Only two of these have accompanying booklets.

Picture Post Filmstrips - 1 filmstrip 'Men against the desert - Water in the desert' by Richie Calder. There is an accompanying booklet for this, as well as a copy of an article from the UNESCO Courier 01/05/1950

The Audio-Visual Centre (colour slides) - 2 filmstrips on deserts, with accompanying booklets

Kay Filmstrip Studios - 1 filmstrip on 'Latitude, longitude and time'

British Instructional Films Ltd - 1 filmstrip on 'London'. There are no notes or booklet for this film.

Common Ground Film strips - 57 filmstrips on various geographical regions of the world, and of Britain.

There is very little information available about many of the companies who provided these educational film strips. What could be found is given below:

USA Office of War Information - they sent film strips to selected schools in the UK and provided projectors on loan to view the film strips

Educational Productions - based in East Ardsley, Yorkshire

Visual Education Centre - this was part of the New South Wales Education Department, Australia

BBC Radiovision - Produced between 1964 - 1990. They involved 2 elements: a sound programme which was broadcast for schools to record and a set of slides or colour filmstrips for use with a stills projector

GBI - Gaumont British Instructional Filmstrips

Picture Post Filmstrips - the film strip we hold 'Men against the Desert' was made by UNESCO, Picture Post, the Ministry of Education and various other organisations in conjunction with the 'English National Committee for Visual Aids in Education', from an article originally published in Picture Post

Common Ground Film Strips - based in London. Provided film strips to schools on a variety of subjects including British and world geography.

A reader wishing to publish any quotation of information, including pictorial, derived from any archive material must apply in writing for prior permission from the Archivist or other appropriate person(s) as indicated by the Archivist.

The filmstrips and accompanying booklets were used at King Edward VI school, Birmingham. Susan Whitehand, a teacher at the school, donated them to the archives with the permission of the school, on her retirement. They were transferred to the Institute in June 2009.
