Scope and Content

The collection comprises of correspondence by Clarke to the Antarctic explorer William Speirs Bruce (Scottish National Antarctic Expedition, 1902-1904)

Administrative / Biographical History

William Eagle Clarke was born on 16 March 1853 in Leeds. He was educated at Leeds Grammar School and Yorkshire College. Between 1906 and 1921, he served as keeper of the Natural History Department at the Royal Scottish Museum in Edinburgh, where he was honorary supervisor of the bird collection. From 1917 until 1920, he was president of the British Ornithologists' Union, and was a member of several committees for the protection of birds, including the Departmental Committee of the Home Office which reported on the Wild Birds Protection Acts. He published reports on birds of the Jackson-Harmsworth Arctic Expedition, 1894-1897 (leader Frederick Jackson) and the Scottish National Antarctic Expedition, 1902-1904 (leader William Speirs Bruce). He died on 10 May 1938.
