Hinton Collection

Papers assembled by Percival Hinton (1896-c1977), journalist and local historian comprising scrapbooks of book reviews and record reviews written by him for Birmingham newspapers and cuttings of articles about Birmingham local history, including the history of Birmingham theatres, also written for the Birmingham press; together with various catalogues and bibliographies prepared by Hinton, some lecture and other notes and preparatory work for his contribution to the Cambridge Bibliography of English Literature

Percival Frank Hinton (1896-c1977) was born on 10 May 1896 at Handsworth. He was educated at Handsworth Grammar School and married Freida Elizabeth Devey in 1932. He was director of the family firm C.F. Hinton and Co. Ltd, a paper and paper bag merchants, 10 Whittall Street, Birmingham. He was also a book reviewer (1922-42) and later editor (1935-60) for the Birmingham Post . He wrote on Midland history for the Sunday Mercury and the Birmingham Evening Mail . His publications include Eden Phillpotts: a Bibliography 1931 and The University of Birmingham (with Eric W. Vincent), 1947. His other interests included book collecting, particularly eighteenth century literature, nineteenth century drama, and also poetry and he was a contributor to The Cambridge Bibliography of English Literature , published in 1940.
