Administrative / Biographical History

Foundation

Isaac Spooner, James Matthias, Aaron Attwood and Thomas Aynsworth formed this private bank in 1791 in Birmingham.

Expansion

It soon became the largest private bank in Birmingham. Its customer base was made up largely by farmers and manufacturers.

Takeover

In March 1865 the business failed, allegedly due to large withdrawals by the Attwood family. At this time the bank had provisionally agreed to merge with the Birmingham Joint-Stock Bank (est. 1861). However, following the collapse, only Attwoods' premises in New Street were acquired.
