Records of Breconshire Lord Lieutenancy and Advisory Committee, 1942-1986, including minutes, 1948-1981; and records relating to the Justices of the Peace, 1942-1986.

Lords-Lieutenant are the representatives of the Crown for each county in the United Kingdom, appointed by the monarch on the advice of the Prime Minister. From its earliest days, the Lord Lieutenancy has been closely associated with the Magistracy, and the Lord-Lieutenant sat on the Advisory Committee responsible for nominating and recommending Justices of the Peace in the county. The Lord-Lieutenant appoints a group of Deputy Lieutenants, and a Vice Lord-Lieutenant is selected from among these Deputies. The Lord-Lieutenant became responsible for the organization of royal visits to the county. He was also responsible for the local militia, an organisation essentially created by the Militia Bill 1757. In 1871 the Regulation of the Forces Act transferred command to the Crown. Radnorshire, Breconshire (or Brecknockshire) and Montgomeryshire each had their own Lieutenancy until local government reorganisation amalgamated them into one after the creation of the county of Powys in 1974.
