Accident research and papers of H O Nelson, Senior Research Fellow at the University of Birmingham, 1971-1974. The research resulted in seat belts being made legal for car drivers and front passengers. Includes 1986 covering note from Nelson stating that the materials are from his Accident Research as Senior Research Fellow at the University of Birmingham. The research was undertaken by a team of scientists under Professor J Kolbuszewski, Head of Department of Transportation and Environmental Planning, headed by George Murray Mackay.
The collection contains two series: [1] Seat belts and [2] General research papers.
[1] The series is comprised of a covering note from Nelson; various accident and injury forms; press release on "Seat Belt Systems for the Future"; photographs of accidents; and several reports. Reports include "Analyses of Collision Analysis Report Forms (CARFs)"; "Study of Injury Protection Offered by Energy Absorbing Steering Systems"; "Society of Automotive Engineers Report on Injuries in Collisions Involving Small Cars in Europe"; "Report on Seat Belt Performance in Real Accidents".
[2] The series is comprised of Conference Proceedings on Biokinetics of Impacts; Road Research Laboratory leaflets (on tyre grips; Asian Highway Network in Nepal; building roads; environmental effects on bridges; gamma-ray core scanner and measuring density of road materials; skidding investigations; properties of rubber; vehicle design for occupant protection); report on Collision Analysis; and papers sent from George Murray Mackay to Nelson relating to accidents, collisions and injuries.
