Incorporated Association of Assistant Masters in Secondary Schools Records

Assistant Masters' Association, Merionethshire branch, records, 1912-1971, comprising minute books of the Central Wales Branch, 1912-1938; and of the Merionethshire branch, 1919-1971.

The Incorporated Association of Assistant Masters in Secondary Schools was established in 1891 as the Assistant Masters' Association. In 1901, articles of incorporation were taken out and it became the I.A.A.M. although referred to as the Assistant Masters' Association throughout. In 1978 it merged with the Association of Assistant Mistresses to become the Assistant Masters' and Mistresses' Association which then became the Association of Teachers and Lecturers in 1993. Its main objects were the promotion of professional status and standards for secondary school masters, including conditions of service, security of tenure, salaries and pensions and also about wider educational policy including the school curriculum and examinations. The Association was organised into regional branches, of which the Central Wales branch was active from 1912 and the Merionethshire branch from 1919.
