Henry Hampden Rich was born in Mauritius in 1891, educated at Aldenham School, and trained at Sandhurst. As a Lieutenant, 120th Rajputana Rifles, he served in Mesopotamia and later in India. He was held POW (Prisoner of War) after the Siege of Kut-el-Amara. Later he became a Major General.
