Scope and Content

An autograph scrapbook containing a collection of letters and an envelope by various figures notable in literature, politics, science and religious affairs during the nineteenth century. Some of the letters were written to W. Cadwaladr Davies, first registrar of the University College of North Wales, others to members of the Lewis family of Bangor and Owen Rowland, the electrician and meteorologist. Authors include:

  • Michael Faraday, physicist and chemist, 1846
  • J.E. Thomas, sculptor and High Sheriff of Brecon, 1853
  • Talhaiarn, poet, 1854
  • W.A. Miller, treasurer of the Royal Society, 1866
  • J.R. (James Rhys) Kilsby Jones, bible teacher and essayist, 1875
  • John Ceiriog Hughes, poet, 1876
  • John Rhys, philologist, 1880
  • Watkin Williams Wynn, politician, 1885
  • Henry Richard, M.P., ?1895
  • W. Fothergill Cooke, inventor
  • Charles Stewart Parnell, M.P. (envelope)

Administrative / Biographical History

Eleanor Yale, ne Lewis, of Llwyn Il, Llanbedrog, near Pwllheli, north Wales was born in 1873, the eldest of the seven children of Sir Henry Lewis of Belmont, Bangor (born 1847) and Annie Lewis, ne Edwards (born 1850). She married George F.C. Yale, son of W.C. Yale Jones Parry of Madryn and a well known estate agent in north Wales. Both she and her husband were graduates of the University of Wales, Bangor.
